A4E – How Fractal Work Emerged

Autonomy  Mastery  Purpose – Plus an increase in productivity of 500%

Julian Wilson & Andrew Holm

What if the most significant obstacle to your success is your organizational approach?

The world around us has changed. We are in the information age; individuals are networked together in ways we could never have imagined. Our phones, PCs, Macs allow us to interact in entirely new ways. Our organizations, however, have not changed to reflect these new technologies. Rather than re-design our organizations to integrate the benefits from these technologies, most have taken their existing organization and woven these technologies around it.

A handful of organizations have utilized this new information technology differently. Matt Black Systems is one of them. Andrew Holm and Julian Wilson re-designed Matt Black Systems around the latest technologies. However, where they arrived was very different.

They documented their journey in 500%: How Two Pioneers Transformed Productivity – The First Truly Self-Leading Organisation.

Agile as a patch ->> Agile as an Outcome

In the Spring of 2021, Andrew and Julian shared how they achieved this remarkable transformation in a 6-part A4E series. They focused on developing new organizational models that display leanness and agility and not applying a patch to their existing model. As a result, their approach and the skills required are quite different from traditional models. Paradoxically, Andrew and Julian came to this view – of the need for a completely new organizational model – resulting in their (eventual) success in taking a traditional company and working diligently to make it into an autonomous organization that displays leanness and agility as its natural state.
